Eminent Tradition

The five-day Renuka Fair, a significant event, begins on the holy day of Prabodhini Ekadashi. On this auspicious occasion, Renuka Lake in the picturesque region of Himachal witnesses the arrival of Parashurama, the celebrated son of Renuka. The lake is believed to be the dwelling place of goddess Renuka, and devout pilgrims from all over the country gather here to witness the emotional reunion of mother and son.

According to ancient Puranic accounts, Renuka Tirtha is revered as the birthplace of Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is said that the revered sages Maharishi Jamadagni and his wife Renuka devoted extensive periods of meditation at a serene hillock known as Tape Ka Tiba, situated near Renuka Lake. It is believed that through the divine blessings of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu was incarnated as their cherished son.

In accordance with local folklore, the tragic tale unfolds after the demise of Jamadagni, who, in his refusal to part with the divine cow, Kamadhenu, meets an untimely end. Renuka, stricken with grief, is said to have made a fateful decision to take her own life by immersing herself in the tranquil waters of the lake.

The lake, it is said, transformed into the likeness of a woman, and from that moment onward, it came to be known as Renuka Lake. When Parashurama undertook a pilgrimage to the lake, beseeching his mother's return, Renuka conveyed that while she had made the lake her dwelling, she would reveal her presence during the auspicious occasion of Prabodhini Ekadashi, where she would reunite with her beloved son and bestow her blessings upon her devout followers.

A day prior, on the auspicious day of Dashami, a grand procession, known as the 'Shobha Yatra,' transports the palanquin of Parashurama from the ancient temple in Jamu Koti village to Renuka. This magnificent event garners the presence of a multitude of devoted pilgrims.
