The Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) has been awarded the first prize in the Swachhta Pakhwada Awards 2024 by the Ministry of Power, Government of India. This recognition is for SJVN's outstanding performance during the nationwide “Swachhta Pakhwada 2024” programme, held annually to promote the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The awards acknowledge the exemplary efforts of power PSUs in advancing cleanliness and sustainable practices. Following a rigorous evaluation by the Ministry of Power, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) secured the second and third positions, respectively.

Swachhta Pakhwada is a fortnight-long cleanliness initiative observed across various sectors of society. The programme, introduced by the Government of India, aims to create awareness and promote a clean and sustainable environment.

Key focus areas of Swachhta Pakhwada include:

  • Awareness Campaigns: Events, workshops, and seminars to highlight cleanliness and hygiene practices.
  • Community Cleanliness Drives: Involving public places such as parks, markets, and schools in clean-up efforts.
  • Competitions and Rewards: Activities like debates, painting competitions, and waste management innovations to encourage participation.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Promoting practices such as waste segregation, recycling, and long-term environmental protection.

SJVN’s Contribution During Swachhta Pakhwada 2024

During the campaign, SJVN demonstrated its commitment to cleanliness and environmental conservation through various initiatives:

  • Conducted cleanliness drives in public parks, market complexes, railway stations, and natural water bodies.
  • Cleaned up 19 blackspots and adopted 14 of them for year-long maintenance.
  • Sanctioned 10 CCTV cameras for the Municipal Corporation of Shimla to monitor and ensure cleanliness.
  • Adopted two public parks at The Mall Road, Shimla, to maintain cleanliness in high-tourist-footfall areas.

In addition, SJVN organized anti-plastic campaigns and distributed reusable bags. Through its Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), the company provided free healthcare services and hygiene awareness to local communities. Competitions like “Best from Waste” were held in schools to instill environmental values in children.


Recognizing Excellence in Cleanliness

The Swachhta Pakhwada Awards celebrate exceptional dedication towards cleanliness and sustainability. This year, SJVN’s initiatives have set a benchmark for others, contributing significantly to the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission. With this win, SJVN has now achieved four first prizes, including three consecutive wins, and one second prize since the inception of the awards.

These efforts underline SJVN's vision of creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for India.
