Chintpurni Festival: A Celebration of Faith and Culture in Una

The upcoming three-day Chintpurni festival, scheduled to take place from September 14 to 16 at the revered Mata Chintpurni shrine in Una district, marks a significant cultural and religious event in Himachal Pradesh. This maiden festival, meticulously planned by the district administration, aims to celebrate the rich religious and cultural heritage of the region while boosting spiritual and religious tourism.

Showcasing the Cultural and Religious Significance

The Chintpurni temple, a revered ‘Shaktipeeth’ as per Hindu mythology, attracts lakhs of devotees from across the globe each year. Recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the temple is believed to be the site where the feet of Goddess Sati fell during Lord Shiva's sorrowful wanderings after her self-immolation. The temple's profound spiritual significance makes it a vital pilgrimage destination, and the Chintpurni festival is expected to further enhance its prominence.

The Deputy Commissioner of Una emphasized that the festival has been strategically planned to align with the government’s initiative to showcase the area's religious and cultural beliefs. The event aims to not only highlight the spiritual significance of the Chintpurni shrine but also promote the rich cultural traditions of the region. The success of this festival is anticipated to significantly boost religious tourism, providing an impetus for improving facilities for the devotees visiting the shrine.

A Colorful Procession and Cultural Festivities

One of the festival's key highlights will be a vibrant Shobha Yatra, a religious procession that will commence from the Chintpurni temple and proceed to the SDM's office, culminating at the playground in Amb where the main event will take place. This procession, infused with religious fervor, will symbolize the deep-rooted faith and devotion associated with the Chintpurni shrine.

The festival will also feature exhibitions showcasing the developmental and welfare schemes of various government departments. Additionally, products made by local self-help groups will be displayed, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's economic and social development initiatives. The inclusion of sports events, such as traditional rural wrestling at the Ramlila ground, will further add to the festival's cultural richness.

The Legend of Mata Chintpurni and the Shakti Peetha

The Chintpurni temple is dedicated to Mata Chintpurni, also known as Chhinnamastika Devi, a form of the divine goddess associated with self-sacrifice and spiritual strength. According to the sacred texts, including the Shri Markandeya Purana, after a victorious battle against the Asuras (demons), Maa Bhagwati’s two sahyoginis (assistants), Jaya and Vijaya, were still thirsting for blood. To quench their thirst, Maa Bhagwati severed her own head, allowing her blood to satisfy them. This act of self-sacrifice earned her the name Chhinnamastika, meaning the goddess without a head.

The Chintpurni shrine is surrounded by temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, believed to guard the sacred site. These include the Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple to the east, Narahna Mahadev Temple to the west, Muchhkund Mahadev Temple to the north, and Shiv Bari Temple to the south. This unique geographical arrangement further reinforces the temple's significance as a divine abode.

Boosting Religious Tourism and Cultural Heritage

The Chintpurni festival is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing religious tourism in Himachal Pradesh. By celebrating the deep-rooted traditions and spiritual significance of the Chintpurni shrine, the festival will attract a broader audience, fostering a deeper appreciation of the region's cultural heritage.

As preparations for the festival continue, the district administration remains committed to ensuring the success of this event, which promises to be a vibrant celebration of faith, culture, and tradition in the picturesque setting of Una district.
